We are extremely busy this week! Frozen and burst pipes. Please follow these tips: 1) Turn up the heat in your house, especially in areas where the walls are cold to touch. If necessary place portable heaters in that area. 2) Leave kitchen, bathroom, laundry room cabinet doors open allowing the heat from the room to reach the plumbing pipes 3) Ensure that all windows and doors are closed tightly even the garage doors to prevent the cold air from coming in. 4) Leave a tap running slightly to reduce the pressure and decrease the chance of your pipes freezing. Choose the tap furthest from where the water enters the house OR the one most likely to freeze, and leave the hot water running slightly for the night. 5) Wrap problem pipes with insulation and / or wrap with a tracing wire or heating tape. 6) Seal and gaps around the home where cold air could come into contact with plumbing pipes. 7) NEVER use open flame to thaw a frozen pipe, as this will cause them to burst. Instead use a heat gun or a hair dryer on low, remember this may take some time so have some patience. 8) If pipes burst, immediately shut off the water supply to prevent flooding and turn on and leave on both hot and cold faucets to the lowest sink in your home, usually the laundry room.
